WCF News: National Shire Horse Show

22nd - 23rd March 2014

National Shire Horse Show

The National Shire Horse Show took place for the first time this year at a new venue, Arena UK, just outside Grantham. There is a strong link between the Farriers and this splendid event, as the Renter Warden, John Peacock, is President of the Shire Horse Society. On the Saturday, a group of 12 Farriers attended the Show, and had a thoroughly enjoyable day, viewing the magnificent geldings and stallions. Company Judge Stephen Gowing AWCF attended the Show on both days, and inspected the shoeing of the participants in 12 classes. Some of the shoeing was extremely disappointing and Mr Gowing did not find any competitors worthy of the award in 2 classes. However, he was extremely impressed by the shoeing of the overall winner of the award, Upperfoot Sir Selwyn, whose farrier is Robert Bedford DipWCF, who also shod the runner up. The Master, who attended the Show with Sally on both days, presented the Best Shod Horse award to the owner and to Robert, and admired Robert's shoeing, which Mr Gowing described as "outstanding". It was a very special day for Robert Bedford, as he also showed his father's mare, Hartcliff Rhianna, who was the Junior Champion, and overall Female Champion.
